Beware Of Fire When You Share A Building With Others

By:

If you are one of the millions of people that live in an apartment building or condominium, then you realize that you do not have the space all to yourself even though there are walls that divide your living space from others. You can sometimes hear you neighbors as they move around, come and go, and especially if they have company and the situation gets a little too loud. You might get annoyed if they take your parking space or litter your half of the yard. No one ever said that this sort of living arrangement is perfect.

These are usually trivial things that you you just get used to, but at least those things are not dangerous. The one thing that is very dangerous for everyone that lives in the same building is fire. All homes need to have smoke detectors, but apartments, condominiums, or even a duplex especially need them because so many people can be at risk. When you move into one of these types of buildings, they might have these devices in them, but you need to be sure they work properly. If you have them in your own apartment and a fire is started, at least you will have some kind of warning. Try to have a fire escape plan to get out of the building especially if you happen to live on one of the upper floors because it might be almost impossible to find the right way out without one.

If you live in an upstairs apartment, try to make sure that the outside fire escape stairs are in good shape. If they are not, get with your landlord and make sure that he gets them fixed. If the landlord will not do this, then you might want to try to find someplace else to live or turn them in to the proper officials. You will need to have renter insurance on your things because if there is a fire, your landlord will not be responsible for the replacement of your personal things in any case. If you have insurance, you can replace the items that were lost.

Do whatever you can to get out of this building, alerting others on your way out. Call the fire department if you are not positive someone else has already. Then all you can do is wait until you are told that you can go back in if that is possible. You will most likely have to find a place to stay until the damage is fixed. Although it might be instinctive to go back inside to help others get out, this is not always a good idea. Many times you will just end up having to be rescued yourself.
