Beware Of Bed Bugs In Chicago

By:

Bed bugs are small wingless parasitic insects. While they are not carriers of any major human disease, bed bug bites can be extremely irritating. They cause redness, swelling and itchiness. Bed bugs are commonly found in mattresses and cracks of furnishings. So most bed bug bites occur at night leading to sleeplessness.

Chicago has fifth largest infestation in the country!

Though almost eradicated in USA around the Second World War, they are now making a comeback with a vengeance. Chicago has one of the worst bed bug infestations in the country. Survey shows that Chicago ranks fifth in the country in terms of bed bug infestation. Only cities with more incidences of bed bugs are New York, Philadelphia, Detroit and Cincinnati. The pest control companies of Chicago reports that 80 to 90% of the calls that they get concerns bed bugs.

Since bed bugs are not the carriers of any major diseases, their occurrence is not monitored by any federal agency. So it is difficult to present statistical data to bring out the seriousness of the problem. A prominent Chicago newspaper reports that bedbugs have been found in downtown buildings as well as government offices in the city. One government office in particular was suffering so badly that they brought in experts to deliver lectures to their employees about ways to deal effectively with a bed bug infestation.

Reports also say that the problem of bed bugs have become so much worse in Chicago that the Chicago Public School at S. Clark street has spend a substantial amount to have its entire building treated. The process used was thermal remediation. Here the rooms were heated to a temperature of 120 F to destroy the bed bugs and their eggs.

What the numbers say

A few statistical data can show how bed bug infestation is becoming more and more serious in Chicago. During August and September of 2009, the 311 helpline of the city received 1478 calls regarding bedbugs. In 2008 the number was 842 for the same months. This shows a 76% increase. Another report is sited by the Metropolitan Tenant Organization. This is a non profit tenants rights group. It reports that between 2008 and 2009 the number of calls regarding complaints about bed bugs have increased by more than two hundred.

The seriousness of the problem is often ignored because bed bugs do not carry any risk of epidemic. For example, though the Metropolitan Tenant Organization records an increase in the number of calls regarding bed bugs, they still only comprise of only 2% of all complaint calls received by it. They caution that you should be more aware of the problem and landlords should take necessary steps to ensure that the bed bug population does not explode as it has done in New York.

There are several pest control companies offering solution of bed bug problem in Chicago. Apart from the traditional methods, many of them depend on specially trained dogs to detect infestation. One website offers a detailed register of reported bed bug incidence in the city. You should check it out from time to time to be on the safe side.

The Governor has recently signed a bill forming a committee to determine the extent of the problem of bed bugs in Chicago. This committee will also recommend methods of management and prevention of bed bugs. Several pest control companies sponsored a summit in Rosemont to discuss the problem.
