Diet and exercise play a very important role in the health of your eyes. Ensure you get enough physical exercise and have a balanced diet, full of vitamins and minerals. Having a balanced, healthy diet helps your health as a whole, but it also provides the best nutrients possible for the health of your eyes.

Studies show that eating foods high in carotenoids is associated with a reduced risk of developing eye degeneration. Foods rich in carotenoids are leafy green vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, and kale.

Another study on eye nutrition has shown a reduced likelihood of developing cataracts for people with diets higher in lutein and zeaxanthin. Foods high in these two carotenoids are broccoli, collard greens, corn, green peas, kale, romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, and zucchini. Lutein is also found in egg yolks.

Eating blueberries has been associated with the reduction of eye fatigue.

Bilberry seems to improve eye health by increasing the blood supply to the eyes (smoking, for example, decreases the blood supply to the eyes). The substance in bilberry that nourishes eye tissue is called anthocyanosides.

Cold-water fish such as salmon, tuna, cod, haddock, as well as sardines, are rich in the healthy Omega 3 oils. Eskimos have almost no incidence of open-angle glaucoma with their diet rich in Omega 3 cold-water fish, which is one of the best foods for the optic nerve. An important part of helping improve your vision is doing eye strengthening and relaxation exercises. One of the most popular exercises is called Palming. Do this for three minutes at a time while visualising something relaxing. I'm not very imaginative and a sandy beach with palm trees works pretty well for me.

Another exercise involves staring at something in the distance every 30 - 60 minutes for at least 30 seconds. You can do this by just looking at the other end of the room you are in, or looking out the window.This exercise will improve your focus of distant objects, by preventing the eye becoming used to focusing only on objects that are close to you.

Certain cultures have a lower incidence of poor eyesight amongst their population. An example of this is China, where children are made to do eye relaxation exercises in the classroom. This shows that certain exercises can improve eyesight.
