Best Ways To Store Red Wine In The Wine Cellar

Once you've made your first wine, it is time to store it. However how do you actually do it in order to get good quality wine as result? The quality of the wine not only lies in the way it is made but also in the way it is stored. Proper conditions will make for a good wine. Wrong storage can really spoil your wine.

One of the main criteria of proper wine storage is right temperature. Most probably you will be storing your wine in your cellar (where it should be!). The temperature should be constant without any fluctuations. For example higher temperatures can make your wine age faster than it should. Too low temperatures, on the other hand, will impede the natural aging of the wine, so when you finally get to taste it, you will have a different result than you would expect.

Using wine cellars is one of the best ways to store your red wine simply because a good cellar has all the qualities that the drink needs: perfect temperature, the right amount of humidity, good insulation, darkness and quietness in the room, and those great racks that allow you to store the wine in horizontal position so the cork is always in constant contact with the liquid. This prevents the cork from drying out which would let in air that would oxidize the wine and spoil its taste.

When it comes to the age, many good wines are stored anywhere between 2-10 years, some even less. It really depends on the type and there are entire books dedicated only to this very subject. Also various wine related forums have real controversial discussions on how long a good red Cabernet or Pinot Noir or Burgundy should be stored.

Another issue that usually comes up among wine enthusiasts is regarding storing already opened but not fully consumed wine. If the bottle has been already opened yet not all the wine has been drunk, what you need to do is keep it at maximum 2 days. More than that and the wine loses its great taste. So you need to drink it somewhere around that time the latest. The way you store it for these additional days is by recorking the bottle and placing it again in horizontal position so that the cork comes again into contact with the wine.
