If you are wondering which is the best treatment for scabies mites, you first of all need to understand what the alternative are. The two main forms of treatment are natural home treatments, using naturally derived products which tend to be kinder on the body, or prescription or over the counter medication which is usually in the form of an insecticide lotion or cream.

Some people believe that using insecticides on the skin has a potential cost in terms of health as well as being costly to buy. These strong insecticides are applied directly to the skin and can have side effects which some people consider might be harmful. The lotions or creams need to be applied in such a way to cover the whole of the skin, which can be very difficult and where children are involved, it can be quite worrying as to whether they will put their fingers in their mouths. There are widely reported differences as to how long these treatments take to work but this is likely to be down to how well the treatment is applied. There is no doubt that when used correctly, they can be effective, but are they the best treatment for scabies mites?

Common Over The Counter/Prescription Treatments

Malathion is often used to treat nits rather than scabies. Some experts have suggested that malathion can cause breathing problems, sickness, headaches and a dizzy sensation.

Permethrin is very commonly used and has side effects such as burning, stinging and itching after use. Fortunately they are usually short lived and normally disappear within a few days. Some experts have expressed concern that as Permethrin is derived from Pyrethrum, which is thought to be harmful to health.

Lindane is used less frequently these days as it has an unwelcome association with seizures and leukemia in children. Farmers who have used Lindane to treat grain and cattle seem to have a higher chance of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. This has led to the treatment being completely banned altogether in many countries.

Natural Treatment

There are various natural treatments which can be used and people are increasingly seeing these as the best treatment for scabies mites.

One excellent treatment is tea tree oil. You should add 25 drops to a warm bath and soak in it for around 15-20 minutes. This can help to kill off the scabies mites. Tea tree oil can also be diluted and applied to the worst affected areas. As with many conditions, prevention is better than the cure and general good hygiene is vital. It helps if you keep the nails clean and short.
