The Defining Factor
The subject line of your email can either make or break your business intention for writing it. Subject lines play a crucial role in email. Once a particular email message is sent to a recipient, there's virtually nothing you can do about it but to wait for a response hopefully a good one. Subject lines act as the heading for your email. It tells the potential reader what the entire message is all about. More often than not, the content of your entire email message is judged immediately by the strength of your subject line. Unless readers find your email worthy of their attention, your email will only end up in the trash. Therefore, the first step when writing email, is coming up with a strong subject line. How? The best practice involved is crafting catchy and compelling subject titles.
The Fundamentals
One of the best practices in creating effective subject lines is paying attention to the fundamentals of the email game. Basically there are Four Us in effective subject writing. You can use the Four Us as a checklist each time you write those highly coveted headlines. The Four Us are the following: Useful, Ultra-Specific, Unique and Urgent. The first U stands for Useful, and it answers the question, Is your email valuable to the recipient? The second U represents the term Ultra-Specific and it asks, Will your reader understand your message? The third and fourth letters in the Four Us stand for Unique and Urgent. Unique means that your email message is compelling and attractive. Your readers must find your email pleasing enough for them to read. Urgent means that your recipient will sense urgency in your email and that they will read it soon after the email is received in their inbox.
The Details
They say that the devil is in the details. Although sticking to the details can be tiresome, its really where the magic happens. Few people know that the secret of most expert email marketers is in paying attention to the details. There are some specifics that we should consider in writing subject lines. The first is your identity. The main reason why people read email is because of the identity of the sender. Its important to note that people will usually buy into your persona first before buying into what your message is all about. Unfortunately, trust is much harder to earn these days due to the massive outbreak of spam. Your goal is to make sure that your email is as authentic as possible. Always remember that the best subject lines are the shortest ones. It may sound funny but the best email subject lines are direct and to the point. It is time to leave behind those colorful words and start by simply writing what your whole point is all about. Quality has always been the result of delving into the details.
