The background check or security check is the process of looking up commercial and official records about a person. Job seekers were scammed in 2 ways, first by being asked to give bank account and credit card information as a condition of employment, and second by being asked to wire or transfer funds out of the country as part of their job. Many of the victims (the job seekers who wired the monies) were not only defrauded of their own money, but they were arrested and charged for illegal transfers and wire fraud.
