Best Methods Of Successful Metal Detecting

By:

Having the correct technique for swinging a metal detector can make or break your find. As you move the device, if the coil is too high above the surface, then the depth is lost in the translation. You may completely miss a treasure if you swing to fast. The same is true if you yourself move to rapidly through the area.

To make it easier for myself as I search, I think of the coil as a paint roller. Think of the detector as being filled with pain and you need to apply the paint to the ground where you are passing. As you make your strokes, think of the paint as it would be applied to a wall. Your goal is to paint the entire area you are covering. By using your imagination and seeing the paint as you go, it ensures that you will not miss any spots.

You should also be sure to hold the coil of the detector as close to the ground as possible. In tall grass you may be 3 or 4 inches above the surface. A smooth surface like a sandy beach is obviously much easier, you can maintain the coil directly above the ground. It is important that you keep the coil as close to the surface as possible, the further away from the ground you hold the coil the more depth you lose. For instance, you have a coin that is located 6 inches below the surface. The metal detector you have, is good to 8 inches, and for the purpose of this example you are holding the coil 3 inches above the surface. That coin will go undetected, the math shows that you need a detector good to 9 inches, you missed it by a single inch. For this example, if you had been directly on the surface, you would have found that treasure.

As you walk, think of the paint roller theory. If you can see the entire surface being painted as you walk, then you are walking at the correct speed. As you walk, if you cannot see the paint on all the spots, then you are walking too rapidly and need to slow down.

I myself use this idea and have been quite successful in my finds. Before you go out and buy a detector, be sure to conduct extensive research online first. Look for how you will use the detector and price.
