Berlin Wall Round Tour

By:

Discover Berlin and its hidden places which stand as reminders of the division of Germany and the Cold War. In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell and Berlin was reunified. The wall was destroyed and the people of Berlin again became one. It became a popular city without separation and has changed utterly over the last 17 years. A lot of streets and buildings have been renewed or built, Shopping Centres created, the wall, razor wire and borders have vanished. Today tourists can buy small pieces of the wall and other typical mementoes of the former German Democratic Republic in an array of Berlin souvenir shops.

Only a few places show the sensational story of Berlin. Still today there stands a small part of the Berlin Wall in the Mhlenstrae near to the River Spree and the Oberbaum Bridge in Friedrichshain. There the Berlin tourists can find the largest existing part of the Wall, with a length of 1300 meters. This is called the East Side Gallery. Here a lot of artists have painted the wall with pictures showing the political changes in the years 1989 and 1990. Another historical point is Bernauer Str., which zigzagged along the Berlin Wall. In this former death strip many East Berliners lost their families and their lives in their attempts to reach the other side in order to be free. Since 2005 the Bernauer Str. is an official memorial place and stands in memory of a dark period in German history.

Tourists and anyone else who is interested in Berlin's past can rent a Berlin Wall guide, which explains and shows the most important points along the wall, from Brandenburg Gate to Checkpoint Charlie, from Bernauerstr. to the East Side Gallery. Walk the Berlin Wall, discover Berlin, and think about a difficult time that has passed, think about the feelings of the citizens of Berlin from 1961 to 1989.
