Benefits Of Laser Safety Goggles

By:

It is amazing to think of how frequently lasers are used today. Surgeons now use lasers instead of scalpels. Without lasers, we could not watch our favorite movies on DVD. Old and unwanted tattoos can be removed with the help of a laser. Because lasers are used so much in this day and age, we might tend to overlook the potential danger threatened by exposure to laser light. Many people in the fields of education and research, science and medicine should be well versed in laser safety practices, especially the use of laser safety goggles.

One of the quickest and easiest ways of practicing laser safety is to obtain and wear a pair. It seems that wearing them should be a no-brainer, and that obviously people who work with lasers would wear them all the time. However, like anything else we become too familiar with, we can lose our respect for the power of lasers as well. Sometimes the people who work with lasers on a daily basis get so used to working around them, that the concept of danger fades away, and they begin to be forgotten.

When lasers were invented, around 1960, people immediately realized the need for a product like this. Not that anyone was a stranger to the idea of protective eyewear. People had been wearing protective eyewear for over a hundred years. While laser safety goggles stepped the technology up a notch, carpenters, welders, construction workers, and surgeons used protective eyewear to keep particles and splatters out of their eyes. They are different from regular protective eyewear because they have to protect the eyes against radiation, not just dust, stones, and drops of blood.

In order to manufacture a pair it would seem that you are manufacturing any old polycarbonate lens. The difference is that when the lenses for them are molded, the mold is injected with specific chemicals, such as lead. The amount of chemical determines the wavelength that they will be fit to protect against. Whatever strength of laser light will be blocked with the glasses or goggles is called the optical density of the laser safety goggles. To put that into better understanding, a pair with low optical density will block the danger from a weaker laser.

The biggest danger about lasers is that the radiation from them stays in the body forever. Every time your mother warned you to not stand in front of the microwave, she did have a point. Every dental x-ray, every time you have flown, any time we had a cat scan stays with us in a manner of speaking. This is why it is incredibly important for people who work around lasers to wear them all the time.
