In the Winter 2009 online issue of Massage Envy magazine, Shelley Flannery writes on the many benefits of hot stone massage therapy. This is another massage therapy modality that can be availed of, along with Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy, from a professional massage therapy clinic in St. Petersburg by residents of St. Pete and Tampa 33607

In Flannery's opinion, the soothing hot stones of hot stone massage therapy melts away stress. The Hot Stone Envy massage session at Massage Envy clinics lasts for 90 minutes, with full body massage. Hot stones are placed on the body and are also used by the therapist in some massage strokes.

The hot stones used in hot stone massage therapy are fine grained volcanic basalt rock that have a high heat retaining quality. They are smooth and relatively flat although they may have different shapes and sizes. At Massage Envy, the policy is to heat the stones in water to reach 135 degrees.

Hot stones in hot stone massage therapy are used either as placement stones or technique stones. As placement stones, they are placed on certain muscle groups so that their heat will penetrate deep into the muscles to relax and soften them. A sheet or towel is always kept between the placement stones and the skin at Massage Envy.

As technique stones, they are used by the therapist in applying certain massage techniques directly on the client's skin. At Massage Envy, the hot stones are used directly on the skin only when the therapist is using continuous movements and never when the stones are stationary. The use of hot stones in the strokes encourages better blood flow and eases pain resulting in better relaxation and the elimination of tension.

According to C.G. Funk, vice president of industry relations and product development for Massage Envy and himself a licensed massage therapist, "The hot stones heat up the skin and relax and soften the muscles, allowing the therapist to reach deeper layers. This treatment is especially effective during the winter months, because muscles naturally constrict and tighten in cold weather."

Aside from these effects, hot stone massage therapy has been shown to be helpful in the treatment of chronic pain such as those brought about by fibromyalgia, rheumatism, arthritis and chronic back pain. It also eases poor circulation, insomnia, depression, stress and anxiety.

Massage Envy is always careful to present the contraindications to hot stone massage therapy. It is not recommended for those who have just undergone surgery or chemotherapy; those who have open wounds; those who have skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis or rashes; those who have a tendency toward getting blood clots; those who are under certain antibiotic medication; and those who are under certain prescription medication that cause skin sensitivity to heat. Pregnant women are required to get clearance from their obstetrician before undergoing hot stone massage therapy.

Clients are urged to discuss their concerns openly with the therapist. They should let the therapist know if they need to have the stone temperature adjusted up or down; if they need any adjustments to the positioning of the stones; and if they want the pressure of the massage strokes adjusted up or down.

Aside from pregnant women who should probably get pregnancy massage therapy instead, massage enthusiasts should give hot stone massage therapy a try, in the same way they have tried Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy and sports massage therapy. They should ask for hot stone massage therapy from their professional massage clinic in 4th Street Downtown St. Petersburg and Tampa 33607
