Benefits Of Having Your Sales Reps Work From Home Part Three

By:

In the first and second installment of this series, we discussed the advantages of having your sales people work remotely and how to solve any problems that might come up in the work-from-home situation. Here are some further reasons to heavily consider having your sales professionals either work entirely from a home office or create a hybrid position where some work is from home and some is on-site.

Location Expansion with Almost No Additional Costs

Let's assume that you are a firm with under 1,000 employees and wish to expand further into lucrative U.S. cities, but don't see a justification for opening an entire new office which would include the following exorbitant fees: rent, electricity, brokerage fees, real-estate attorney fees, office maintenance fees, office administrative expenses, office supply fees, in-house server and technology costs... the list goes on. The solution? You can simply hire an outside sales representative to cover the region and have them work from any location that is convenient to them. Regardless of the economy, it is not extremely difficult to find good, reliable sales representatives. All it takes is a little hunting and research. The cost of hiring a sales rep and providing them with the necessary tools they need to work from home effectively is far less than opening a whole new office.

Additionally, if you want an office setting to meet with clients or vendors and don't see a need for your sales representative to travel to their office, there are many inexpensive ways to rent a conference room for a few hours, or better yet, have them meet your rep. at a hotel.

Recruitment Advantages

Having remote or semi-remote sales representatives gives your firm several recruitment advantages. First, people enjoy working from home and, when given two similar job choices, will almost always lean towards choosing the position that will allow them to work from a home office.

Additionally, you get a free few thousand dollars included to your base salary offering. When a sales representative works from home, they are allowed certain tax deductions off of their rent or mortgage. For some, this is a substantial amount. The job applicant will typically factor in this tax advantage when examining the overall compensation package you are currently offering.

Employee Mobility

Increased mobility benefits everyone. Let's say that the office from where your salesman or saleswoman works from is twenty miles away. If they happen to have a prospect meeting twenty five minutes in the other direction, there is really no reason for them to have to make the trek into the office. Instead, they can use that hour or two (maybe more if in a traffic heavy city) to do something more productive such as going over their presentation or doing some extra research.
