There are many ways to combat obesity, with the benefits of exercising topping the list. You might wonder why it is that obesity seems to be a major problem faced by so many in the United States. There is statistical evidence from studies that the United States leads the charge in the obesity race. The conclusion is a staggering 64 percent of women and an even higher percentage of men coming in at 72 percent are clinically obese. The statistics can prove disastrous for any of these groups.

In an age where the Internet brings unlimited power to our fingertips, anything and everything is possible. Online shopping and banking, and instant access to YouTube, MySpace, Facebook through social media have Americans glued to their computers. When you really think about it, when was the last time you actually hand wrote a letter, walked to your mailbox and physically mailed something to a family member or friend? It's amazing how so many tasks that we used to perform on a daily basis have almost become obsolete with the immense impact of the Internet.

As television has soared to new heights in ratings, leaving us with the unparalleled fear of not making it home in time to catch our favorite shows. Consoles such as the beloved PlayStation 3 deliver tag lines on commercials like,"PS3; it only does everything." Everything? Really? I even bought one for myself off Amazon with the hopes that it would make me breakfast in the morning.

What's happening to our society that few people are informed of the benefits of exercising and the importance of health? We are technologically advanced in every way, but are rarely told of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. With easy access to an endless array of $1.00 menu's, we demand food that is fast and cheap because we work long and hard. It's not really our fault if we aren't aware of better options and alternatives, is it?

The good news is that you do not have to let technology keep you sitting on your butt all day long. If you are one of the aforementioned victims, afflicted by the plaguing urge to negate good judgment then please, abandon your bon bons, leave the safety of your couch, and join us in fighting the legions of excess baggage.

If you think that some buffed-up over-tan vein-flaunting wannabe-be trainer coming straight off his road rage is not exactly a source of inspiration, then here's the idea. You have to gain your own inspiration and maybe start small. If you work in an office and cannot get out until lunch, grab a couple of coworkers and take a walk around the building.

You don't have to pour all your jelly rolls into size two gym clothes, pay an expensive gym fee or buy all kinds of useless weight-loss gadgets that gather dust under the bed. Why not round up a group of friends for a group walk or take the kids to the park and play with them a bit. Of course, activities like this have to become part of a regular routine in order for you to experience any health benefits or witness those lost inches around the muffin-top.

Do what you feel is right and empower yourself. You will feel better all-around and when you feel stronger and in control of your life, everything else will start to look up too. If all else fails, do it to avoid being the person that has to say, "I got these hips from my mother."
