Benefits Of Anti-lock Brakes

By:

When was the last time you had to step on the brakes to stop for something? Did you really have to step on them so that there wasn't an accident? Hopefully, it hasn't been recently. Whenever the last time was, it was probably reassuring to know that the system on the vehicle worked. Most people don't appreciate how easy it is to stop now compared to what it used to be like when the brakes were stepped on in an emergency situation. Anti-lock brakes have made the safety of the situation much better.

Why They Were Created

Anti-lock brakes were created because there are many times when a vehicle will step on the brakes, and then still go out of control and get in an accident because of the skid. The skid happened because when old braking systems locked up, the tires quit spinning, and traction was lost on the road. It didn't really matter what the conditions were on the road. The car could skid and go out of control. Engineers looked at the activity and the cars, and came up with a way that they could prevent accidents from happening with a modification to the brakes.

This became the anti-lock system. People can still step on the brakes, but with the modern designs, the tires will not lock up with the brakes engaged. Since the tires are allowed to spin at a very high rate of speed, they still keep in contact with the road in all areas, and can maintain traction better. If the roads are slippery, there might still be some kind of skid on the road. However, with the air pumped in through the brakes and the way it works, the skid should be more manageable, and the car should not slide as far, or as fast as what it would have a couple of decades ago.

They Are Beneficial

Vehicles with anti-lock brakes need to be worked on a little differently than ones that don't have it. Pumping the brakes used to be recommended when the car needed to stop on an icy road. Now, gradual and even pressure needs to be applied as you use the brakes. The air working in the anti-lock brake system can be felt against your foot as it works to get the car stopped safely. Pumping the brake pedal can actually be worse on an anti-locking car, since it releases the pressure that releases the air that is working in the anti-lock system.

Having anti-lock brakes isn't an option on a car anymore, it is just a given. Vehicles have the safety feature included on them as they roll out of the factory, nowadays. The system has been refined so that the parts are easy to make, and the technology isn't as expensive as it was previously. It is one safety feature that is taken for granted because it works so well to keep people safe. In the future, there might even be a more sophisticated system that works to stop a vehicle than the one we already have.
