Bell Moto-9 Motocross Helmet Review

Bell Moto-9 Motocross Helmet Review

Bell has raised the bar this year by improving its incredibly popular Moto-8 helmet by refining the fit and ventilation of their high end helmet. The Bell Bell Moto-9 is constructed of a composite shell with interwoven Kevlar, fiberglass and carbon fiber. The "TriMatrix Composite" shell gives the new Moto-9 just the right blend of strength and keeps it in a light weight frame. Our size Medium helmet that we tested weighed in at just 1587 grams (or 3 pounds 8 ounces). Its not the lightest helmet on the market but does still have a very high-end feel.

The Bell Moto-9 is designed with safety as the primary focus with form following function (we should hope so, it is a helmet after all). Every feature on the Bell Moto-9 is built to keep you as injury free as possible in a crash. From the magnetic cheek pads called the Magnefusion Emergency Release System (MERS) that are designed for easy removal by emergency personal to the Shock Doctor airbag features.

The liner is removable and washable and washable and made from X-Static, a silver-woven antimicrobial and antibacterial material that wicks moisture away from the head and kills 99.9 percent of odor causing bacteria.

The Bell Moto-9 is specifically designed to accommodate Shock Doctors Helmet Eject Removal System. The Helmet Eject is a deflated airbag that sits on the crown of the head and pushes the helmet off when inflated avoiding tugging on the neck or spine by medical personnel. The magnetic cheek pads also facilitate removal. The cheek pads go in and out so easily youd almost think there is something wrong and that they wont stay in place while riding but during our entire test this never became an issue.

The visor is held on by only two screws as apposed to the traditional 3. The reason Bell does this is so that in a crash where the visor hits first it will slide up and absorb some of the impact. It sounds like a great feature but during riding the visor does have a tendency to move around a little up and down no matter how tight you have the two screws tightened. In case of a hard visor hit the two retaining screws are hollow and are designed to shear off in order to absorb some of the impact. The two screws have a flip up tab to allow you to tighten the visor with gloves on.

The biggest improvement over the old Moto-8 is in the comfort area. The Moto-9 has a much more plush liner.

Pros: The helmet has a great feel and tons of built in safety features. It comes in five different colors and two patters.

Cons: We would like to see the Helmet Eject system included in a helmet at this price.

Bell Sports continues to improve their helmet line while continuing to reduce the price. With helmets like the Bell Moto-9 were sure that Bell will be back as a leader in the motorsports industry after about a ten year absence.
