By:

When looking for a great vacation spot in Central America, many people flock to the wonderful cities and beaches that Mexico has to offer. As spectacular as they are, another superb vacation experience awaits just below Eastern Mexico, tempting the tourist with tropical beaches and sandy retreats. I am speaking of Belize, and you may just be tempted to look for property for sale in Belize at the end of this article.

Belize is the only Central American country whose official language is English. While other languages are spoken in the relatively small country, there is no need to be fluent in Spanish or French to enjoy a conversation with many of the locals. This can be a real benefit for those of us who would like to go to exotic locales but prefer the comfort of communicating in our own language.

Belize is a little smaller than nine thousand square miles with a population of just over a third of a million people. It is unique in that it has English colonial heritage - hence the official language - and has the lowest population density of all of the Central American countries. The early inhabitants of the region were the Mayans, and their cultural remains can be found across Belize in places like Caracol, an ancient Mayan city in the Cayo district of Belize, dating back to as early as 1200 B.C.

Belize is lined with beautiful beaches and coral reefs with thousands of caves and coves - a perfect place for fishing or relaxing on the ocean. Its Caribbean qualities ensure a tropical climate with wet and dry seasons, and the moisture marks the quality of the weather far more than the temperature. Being close to the equator, the temperatures hover in the upper seventies year round, rarely going above eighty in July or below seventy-five in January.

The tropical vegetation is alive with beautiful rock formations and exotic plants and animals. More than half of the country is forested, preserving its natural beauty and sense of mystique. The casual traveler must be warned that visiting Belize may result in eventually scouting for a patch of Belize property for sale. Once you arrive you may never want to leave.

There are so many wonders in Belize that tourism is a major part of business there. The government has declared tourism as second only in importance agriculture. Over a quarter of a million tourists (the great majority of them from the U.S.) enter Belize to experience all that the little country has to offer.

Whether it is snorkeling through the reef, exploring the largest cave system in Central America, visiting the Mayan ruins, or simply relaxing on the beach, Belize is a magical place, sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.
