Loneliness is too frequent. It is experienced by people of all places and of all ages, from people who live in diapers to those who live in retirement homes.

As experienced the acute pang of loneliness understands, it's not pleasant. What most people don't know, nethertheless, is that loneliness also has grave and extensive health concerns. As a matter of fact, one landmark study found that loneliness can be fatal.

The study went like this: several thousand people completed a health survey send out by a group of researchers. Among other things, these people answered questions about how much social support they had, such as whether they were married, belonged to a group, and how much interaction they had with friends.

The researchers compiled the data and then , nine years later, followed up with the respondents. What they became aware of was shocking. Many more of the respondents who were susceptible to loneliness, those who reported weak social connections, had {passed away~passed on~died during the nine year period.

It looked that loneliness did more than cause people to feel depressed. The researchers discovered that loneliness could also seriously affect peoples health and well being, even to the point of causing death.

What's fascinating is that there were different types of social relationships that seemed the most important. For men, it was marriage; for women it was being connected with friends. In the study, twice as many single men had passed away than those men who were married. Likewise, more than twice as many woman who were in touch with friends had passed away, compared to those who were in touch with friends.

For men, this suggests that having romantic relationships is critical. For woman, it is developing close and meaningful friendships. With more seriousness than is comfortable, these could be said to be matters of life and death.

What's more, these results were only over a nine year period. Relative to a lifetime, that isn't much time. It is likely that, over a lifetime, the consequences of loneliness would be even more obvious.

It is important to make a note of is that this research does not mean everyone who lacks a social network will die, only that these things were discovered to be correlated. But it is a shocking relationship nonetheless. It suggests that as well as being an displeasing emotion, loneliness can be hazardous and should be taken seriously.

In light of this, it is vital to take strides to counter loneliness. One of the best ways to learn how to improve communication skills, and to socialize and connect with others.

Its sad to say, but many people have problems with this. They feel shy and have problems building relationships with others.

You dont have to worry though, this can be changed; the ability to connect with others is a skill that can be learned. There are certain techniques with which developing a connection with others comes easily and naturally.
