Being Aware Of Low Self Esteem Symptoms Is The Start.

Low self esteem haunts thousands upon thousands of people every hour of every day, but is not always obvious. If you do not remain vigilant for low self esteem symptoms, the problem may spiral out of control before you are able to act. Being aware of the symptoms is the first step to beating the clandestine affliction of low self esteem.

Common Low Self Esteem Symptoms

Low self esteem symptoms are not always apparent. In fact, low self esteem may cause an aggressive or blaming attitude (the opposite of what most people would expect). Consistently blaming others for your shortcomings or complaining about always receiving the short end of the stick are signs of a lack of personal responsibility. Attempting to diffuse responsibility to other people or on circumstances out of your control are low self esteem symptoms. Unfortunately, this malicious mentality is self-propagatingthe more it is practiced, the more powerful and habitual it becomes.

Running from feelings and emotions is also among low self esteem symptoms. Rejecting reality because of negative emotions or pain is a simple anodyne for a complex problem, but it is ultimately damaging to your confidence and happiness. Repressing intense feelings can become habitual, and eventually an addiction. It saps the joy and energy from your life experiences, leaving you apathetic and depressed. We become stronger by confronting challenges and overcoming them. While it is OK to run occasionally, making a habit of it weakens your resolve and will-power. Explore yourself and your environment so you can learn and grow stronger. Otherwise, you will shutter yourself away from all the good and happiness that life has to offer.

Self-rejection or self-hatred is another common low self esteem symptom. It is fine to revere a role model, or use their life as a pattern for your own, but do not let this foster a sense of self-loathing. It is only natural to care about how others view us, but it should never override our own opinions of ourselves. You are the only person capable of truly judging yourself. You are the only person that can see what truly goes on in your mind, see your intentions and determine the value and integrity of your actions. Dont be afraid to appreciate and love yourself. Be proud of your positive qualities and achievements. Positive reinforcement generates positive changes.

The crumbling of personal boundaries and ethics is one of the most insidious of low self esteem symptoms. Stand up for yourself; do not give in to peer-pressure. If you are not OK with acting or speaking a certain way, then dont do it. You are not obligated to bend to the will of others, just as they are not obligated to bend to yours. There are times when saying no seems more trouble than it is worth, but think of the ramifications that it will have down the road. Is being a yes-man worth sacrificing your integrity and solidarity? Is it worth devaluing yourself? Dont push your will on to others and dont let them push their will on to you.

This is not to say that you should hole yourself up in your room and avoid people altogether. There are plenty of honest, enjoyable people in the worldso dont build a 3-story wall to block out your neighbours! Develop a balance between socializing and self-respect; these two habits are not mutually exclusive. Avoiding social activities is a leading symptom (or cause) of depression, and it is certainly among the most virulent of low self esteem symptoms.

If you have trouble socializing, then slowly break yourself from this habit. Dont put yourself in situations you are uncomfortable with, but you have to be willing to experience life or you will find yourself alone and miserable. Be yourself, honestly and genuinely. You will attract like-minded people over time and find your place in society, and dont be afraid to smile!
