Being Alerted To A Fire In The Home Does Not Mean You Should Try To Put It Out

By:

People that have never had a house fire might not realize all of the dangers that are associated with one. A fire can start many ways and you might end up being surprised by one. It is just a good idea to have some kind of warning device in your home for just this situation. You can install smoke and fire detectors through out your home to help give you this advanced warning.

These devices are usually pretty cheap and you can buy them at almost any department store. These devices usually have a life time of 3 to 5 years. You will also need to make periodic checks on the batteries that run these devices. If you find one that is bad before the five years is up, just go buy a new one. All of these devices are there to protect you in the event of a fire. Fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors are not that expensive and when you can invest just a few dollars in a device that can literally save your life, is is just irresponsible to not have them.

You should even buy a fire extinguisher or two to have in your home or even in your car or garage. There are different sizes and types of fire extinguishers for different kinds of buildings. If you have a really big building or home you might need more then one. There are extinguishers that are made specifically for putting out chemical fires or fires started by grease, gas, or some other flammable liquid.

When you have these warning devices and fire extinguishers in your home or business, these items can give you enough time to remove yourself from your home or business. Try to stay calm during a fire and use your escape plan to get out of the house the best way possible. The worst thing for you to do during a fire is panic. The more you panic, the less you can think straight and the more mistakes you can make. There is no room for mistakes when you are trying to escape a burning building.

The only time you should ever even try to put out a fire is when it is small enough that you might be able to put it out with your extinguisher. If you even think that the blaze is already out of control, never stay and try to fight it alone. Getting the fire department there as quickly as possible is your best bet to salvage the home or business. If you know there is an explosive element like an oxygen tank or a gas line in the building, it is better to get out quickly and never try to fight the blaze because there could be a sudden explosion that could render you helpless to escape at all.
