Being a Good Figure Skating Parent
Now that your child has entered into the world of figure skating, it is time for you, as the parent, to learn the basics of being a good figure skating parent. When we follow these recommendations and model good sportsmanship for our children, we help to create a positive, healthy and fun environment in which all of our skaters will thrive.
Be prepared and punctual for every practice session
This should ultimately be your skaters responsibility, but it is up to you to make sure that your skater understands how a lack of preparedness can negatively affect their efforts. Be sure that they are aware of how valuable ice time is and understand that being late is disrespectful to others.
Be positive at every practice session
Be aware of what your skater is working on and offer plenty of positive reinforcement. Praise your skater when they do well and be sure to be there with comfort and encouragement when they are struggling.
Respect your skaters coach
Do not try to teach your child from rink side or the bleachers. Let your coach do the coaching. If you have any questions or concerns, schedule a meeting with your skaters coach.
Follow the rules or guidelines set by your rink or club
These rules are in place to foster a safe, healthy environment in which all skaters, coaches, parents, rink employees and skating officials are to be treated with respect.
Resolve conflicts with other skaters, parents, coaches or officials privately
Dont become involved in gossip or spreading rumors. Try to get along with everyone involved in figure skating.
Emphasize the importance of good sportsmanship
Teach your skater to praise and encourage other skaters.
Be a positive role model for your skater
Modeling respect for others teaches an important life lesson for your skater. Keep all comments positive and avoid criticizing other skaters, coaches or officials.
Make skating fun
Remember that your child is skating for his/her own pleasure, not yours.
Smile, relax and enjoy the journey
Be friendly and helpful to other skating parents, especially the newbies. Always support and encourage everyone involved in the sport. This will help to create the atmosphere that you want for your skater.
Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of figure skating! I hope that these basic guidelines will help guide you in your journey into the world of figure skating.
