Located on Chongwen Districts Tianqiao South Street, the Beijing Museum of Natural History is known for being the first ever comprehensive museum of natural science in China. The museum is mainly engaged in scientific research, specimen collection and science popularization work related to the fields of zoology, palaeontology, anthropology, botany and others, with a separate hall dedicated to each field. Housing over a 100,000 artefacts, specimens and fossils including a number of complete large ancient mammal fossils, the museum boasts the famous fossil called Stegodon zdanskyi which is a type of ancient elephant.

The hall of Palaeontology features fossil remains from the Cenozoic, Mesozoic and Paleozoic eras, creating an outstanding chronicle of prehistoric life that prevailed millions of years ago.

Over 2,000 specimens are housed at the Hall of Zoology, carefully arranged to illustrate the course of evolution from the initial aquatic to complex forms of terrestrials. The collection is inclusive of Chinese fauna, from parrot and peacock of the southwest to the otter and lynx of the northeast; from terrestrial creatures including the giant panda to sea dwellers such as the whale. Elaborately coloured models of coral and jellyfish and enlarged models of protozoa are also among the collection.

Representing both fresh-water and sea aquatic life are hundreds of fish specimens. A Chinese alligator and large leatherback sea turtle never failing to awe visitors are among the reptile specimens.

A comprehensive collection of avian life specimens can also be seen at the museum whilst a specimen of about three-year-old sei whale is featured in the mammal section. An assortment of numerous forms of algal life including laver, agar and kelp of various colours is displayed at the aquarium in the Hall of Botany. In addition to permanent exhibitions, the museum holds temporary exhibition on a yearly basis.
