"You do not have to resemble your character but if you really want to be believable, then you may want to choose a character that describes you such as if you are short, choose a shorter character, if you are tall, choose a taller character and so on. Remember, you are portraying this character so do what makes you feel right. You can try various characters before you can finally fit into your role playing character.
Cosplay can be extremely fun especially if you just want to let loose.
