Horse Training – The Basics of Being a Horseman

Do you want to learn beginner horse training basics?

Every aspiring horseperson needs to learn the fundamentals of groundwork as it is the basis of natural horsemanship. You will have a hard time riding the equine if you are not able to master groundwork basics. Valuing the basics is the recipe to horse training success.

Here are some important horse training terminologies:

* Natural Horsemanship – The principle of using the natural tendencies of the horse. Training and dealing with equine is done by recognizing and using the horse’s language.
* Groundwork – Work done between horse and trainer before the person ever attempts to ride the equine. It is intended to train the horse boundaries, acceptable ground manners, how to use its feet and how to think of you as the head horse in the herd.
* Horseman – Any individual who handles a horse; a person that loves and respects the natural behavior of the horse and using that knowledge to handle it.
* Pressure – Cues and tools used to get the animal to understand what you are attempting to have happen with the animal's response. You must teach the animal to yield to pressure. Send clear signals and motivate your horse.
* Desensitizing or Sacking out – The process of making the horse get use to the stimuli that the animal may encounter.

There are plenty more terminologies and definitions to learn and you will encounter them as you go along with the training.

Establishing your leadership over the horse is crucial. You need the animal to respect you and see you as the alpha of the herd. Achieving that would make your experience as a horse handler much easier. Always keep in mind to use positive reinforcement and never ever hurt the horse by hitting it. All of these things are accomplished with proper ground training.

6 keys to horsemanship success

* Be positive always. Your horse can sense this and you will definitely have a fruitful training if your mind-set is always positive.
* Seek knowledge of how your horse works and behave under any circumstances. A thorough understanding will make your training easier and more fun in the future.
* A horseman should have the right gear.
* Techniques should be studied and exercised to perfection.
* You must be patient and have time to understand and train your horse. Take the time to do it right or don't do it at all.
* Imagination is also crucial in horse training. Imagination will help you and your equine enjoy each other's company.

These are the traits that you and your equine, as a team, should possess. A horseperson should have: Heart or Desire, Attitude, Feel, Balance, Timing, Experience, and Savvy. On the other hand, the Equine—with the help of the handler—should have: Respect, Impulsion, and Flexion.

These are beginner horse training basics that a horseman should master. Develop and memorize them by heart.
