Before You Watch Tv, Clean Up The Kitchen, Challenge Yourself To Make It Fun

By:

Who does not agree that there is nothing worse than waking up to a mess? All those dirty dishes and sticky substances that have since hardened onto plates and counter tops. It makes for an ugly start, especially when you are scrambling to eat a quick breakfast before your long commute. Then, at the end of the day, there is the mess still waiting. If only you had taken care of it the night before.

Tip: Clean up the Kitchen while you are Cooking and Immediately After Eating

Few people can claim to actually enjoy cleaning the kitchen, but there are ways to make it easier. First of all, keep in mind the satisfaction you will feel when the job is done. How much better you will feel in the morning. Simply remembering your incentive is a big step.

Second, try to clean as you cook. When something is on the burner, take a moment to start loading or unloading your dishwasher. You can cut the job in half.

Tip: Make a Game out of It

Another approach is to challenge yourself to make it fun. You might listen to music and dance while you are working, or make it into a game. For example, I enlist my son, assigning him the role of dish receiver. Or sometimes I will be the dish receiver. The job of the dish receiver is dish installation. The dishes are either installed into the cabinets or the dishwasher. Because we own the dishes, I like to joke that each dish is a free dish.

"No charge for this dish, son," I joke as I hand him one. "This here dirty dish is a free dish."

Having roles makes the job go faster, and when my son thinks of himself as the dish receiver, he is not as grumpy when I tell him to "pick up the pace and place this dish direct into the cabinet!" Of course, placing a dish direct into anything is incorrect English, but my son is a bright boy and knows to add ly to his adverbs. He might not be old enough to say it, but he knows the difference between speaking formally and colloquially. And his coordination improves almost daily! We challenge each other to work as fast as possible, which can lead to other messes. When a dish goes flying, we call that dish a satellite dish. "There goes another satellite dish dropping out of orbit! Get the vacuum!"

With the Job Done, Relax

When our kitchen is clean and tidy, it is time to turn our attention to the more important satellite dish. The one that provides our satellite TV. If you try it I think you will agree, watching TV is always more enjoyable with the mess out of the way.
