The Second 5 Things of 10 You Should Ask Yourself Before Starting A New Business
In a previous discussion I gave you ten questions to ask about yourself, then promised to give you the reasons you should ask them. This is the second of two articles focusing on the rest of the personal qualities you need to identify before starting a business and how they relate to building a business.
Number six is next in line and the question was, “What are you most happy doing?” Of course you probably would like to always do what you are most happy doing, but unfortunately that’s not the way it works. You need to know what it is that motivates you so that you eventually can do much more of what makes you most happy. This is what many successful entrepreneurs call their “Why” and it is what they keep their mind’s eye on when things become difficult.
The seventh question was,“When you are frightened, what do you do?" Sometimes we are not even aware how we typically react, so it will be helpful to ask someone else. I thought I was a pretty good problem
solver, but I asked someone and found out that I typically withdraw when frightened, and then I end up working around a problem instead of facing it head on. That told me that when I find myself working around
something, I could be afraid for some reason. Some people react with anger, but also can help give extra determination. When we observe our reactions, we can more easily face our fear and ask for the help we need.
The eighth question is “Are you a planner?” Knowing whether or not you are a natural planner will lead you again to the type of help you need, which it be a person which can help you to write down the details
and set benchmarks on certain dates, or if you just need a planner, such as a Daytimer or a Franklin Planner. Maybe you just need a Time Management Seminar.
The ninth question to ask was, “Are you a ‘numbers’ person?””. This time you probably won't have to ask anyone else. We all know that numbers are very much a part of business and accounting is a necessity. But the
answer to this can determine whether you will need a general accountant for taxes only, a day-to-day bookkeeper, or just a simple accounting software that you can do yourself. Only you know the answer to this
and how much time you will devote personally to this area.
The tenth and last question you need to ask yourself is, “Are you flexible?” You will probably know the answer, but if you don’t, do ask someone close to you. You will need to know to set some boundaries. It you are too flexible, you may react too quickly to the demands of others and get little done for your business. If too rigid, you may end up with angry family members or customers and will need to adjust. There is an old
saying: “Your lack of planning is not my emergency.” You may want to use this or something similar for your signal that you no longer will take care of problems others have created.
Remember that tons of information on business building is both free and cheap on the Internet. Just verify what you find and don’t believe everything you read. A good guideline is to follow the links of those
who post and follow them back to legitimate people with real and successful lives. I wish you success in your endeavors, and hope these tidbits will make a real difference for you and the future of your business.
