Before Finding A Cure For Halitosis

By:

When full blown halitosis 'hits' it should be pretty obvious to everyone that a cure is needed. That is obvious, but often it is not as obvious as it should be to the person with the condition. Hard to believe I know but I can recall two recent occasions when I struggled with halitosis although it was the other person with the problem, not me!

I bumped into an old friend in a pub, recently and it was great to see her after many years. We chatted but as the pub grew louder I had to get closer to hear her. I didn't linger, the stench of smoking was overpowering! Well to be fair it smelt as though she was breathing an ashtray on me. I do not exaggerate, but this pales into insignificance compared to the second incident.

An old acquaintance introduced me to her current partner at a recent party. He seemed fine until he spoke, usually you would assume that it was what he said that was the problem but no, it was his pungent breath. I am often accused over exaggerating when I describe this incident but I have to assure you I do not.

His breath was foul, no exaggeration, so strong that it was almost visible! Well perhaps seeing it is a little over the top but you could taste it. It almost had a 'poison cloud' presence of its own. I asked other friends if they had noticed it, there was a pattern in their responses. Those further removed from the boyfriend where able to express their dislike for his halitosis, while those who knew him better were reluctant to voice an opinion.

There's two points here, firstly, halitosis often affects others more than the sufferer, certainly socially. This can lead to embarrassment and awkwardness, often more pronounced in those without the condition. It is often friends and family that suffer with the condition not wanting to offend the person with bad breath! Secondly, this 'politeness' can prolong the situation! It does more harm than good. Whatever, it is a particularly undesirable condition, which can reach a terrible stage before treatment is sort.

I would say it is important for friends of a sufferer to let that person know they need to get their condition checked out. There are numerous causes of halitosis but the first stage is realizing that you have the condition, sometimes it is up to a significant other to help the sufferer before finding a cure for halitosis can be considered.
