By:

Almost all low-priced digital camera models feature just one built-in focus option, auto focus. Auto focus basically means that the digital camera will perform the work for you and automatically focus on the subject you are shooting. On the other hand, digital SLR cameras usually have three distinct selections for focus including single auto focus, continuous auto focus, and manual focus modes. Each one of these methods has its place and therefore are useful in different settings.

Single auto focus is a standard feature on pretty much every digital camera currently available. With this focus mode, simply press the shutter button midway or all the way down to automatically focus on the photographic subject. This focus mode is most suitable for shooting static objects that aren't moving.

Using continuous auto focus, your digital camera will adjust the focus continuously while shooting. Because of this, this focus mode is well suited for taking photos of objects that are moving. For instance, taking photographs of a monkey swinging in the trees at the zoo or of a basketball player running down the court during a basketball game. Because the camera is continuously adjusting, your photographs will not turn out blurry because of movement.

Manual focus removes the power out of the digital camera's hands and places it into your hands. This particular focus mode offers the photographer the ability to correct the focus where they see fit. Focus may be controlled either with a rotating ring attached to the lens or using a a set of buttons. It is likely not the right method for skilled photographers who would like the utmost regarding creative control.

Each focus mode on an SLR camera has its own advantages and disadvantages. The key is learning how each of them work and for what conditions they've been designed for. After you have that down, try shooting a number of shots utilizing these different focus modes to observe how they end up. When you start to get a greater feel for how each focus mode functions and what the results are, you are going to be capable of intuitively choose the ideal focus based on the actual scenario.
