Becoming A Trade Union Official

A trade union has the task to take care of employee needs. Such a union will make sure that employees are treated properly, that their rights are not neglected and that their working conditions are adequate to the pay, which they receive. In most cases all of those matters are solved with negotiations with the employers, with those negotiations, the trade unions arrange the conditions, which are suitable for both the employers and the employees. The ones that represent the interests of the employees and the union members in those negotiations are the trade union officials. The officials are full time employees of the trade union, they have numerous different tasks to deal with and they are an important factor for the effectiveness of the union.

There are two types of trade union officials - the ones that represent the union at regional level and those who work for the national office of the union. The main obligations of the officials that represent the union in regional level are to recruit and train new local officials. They will also deal with the local disputes and problems with work, another task of these officials is to promote learning and to advice and educate the local union members. The obligations, which the national office trade union officials have, are a bit broader. The tasks that they have are developing a national policy, researching, dealing with the media and leading negotiations with the government and politicians.

There are certain skills which you will need to develop if you want to become a trade union official, those skills are essential for this job and the tasks that come with it. One of the most important things about a union official is to be aware of employee interests and to know how to benefit the employees welfare. A trade union official should ha excellent skills in communication, negotiation and of course listening, this will help the official to be effective and to communicate with the union members even in challenging situations. Self-confidence and the ability to speak in public are other important traits of a union official.

There are trade union training courses, which can be helpful for if you want to take such a position, some of the courses are going to be mandatory for you. These courses can be run by your own union or they can be run by commercial trading organizations as well. These trade union courses are a structured program, which will cover a lot of topics. The courses will provide you with advocacy skills; they will provide you with knowledge on the employment law and with health and safety requirements for the workers. Some qualifications that you have taken some management courses will also be helpful for this profession. You can take several exams, which will provide you with some skills that will improve your effectiveness as a trade union official.

Being such an official is a full time job with a lot of obligations. You will have numerous responsibilities and a large number of the union members will rely on your skills when they have work related problems. This is why trade union training is so important.
