Becoming a 3D Animator

All animators must have great understanding of motion, movement and acting. Acting? Yes, acting! The elite class takes acting lessons

because this helps them to understand their body movements and it will make it easier to them to use the understanding into their work.

The right observation is the most important skill what they must have. They need to observe lives around them and how things move. They

make sketches, take notes and try to understand what they observe. They don't study just animation. They watch films, theater, read

comic books just to learn how poses and movement creates moods and body messages. Beginners should start learning from the masters of

20th century animation like Walt Disney, Ken Anderson and others. So, the first thing a new 3D animator should learn is the old manuals

of 2D artists. Richard Williams even has a book called: "The Animator's Survival Kit" It's a book about hand-drawn animations, it also

contains everything you'll need to know about 3D world animation techniques.

Beginner 3D artist need to first concentrate on basic objects like how to make a ball move from location A to location B, and how to

make the ball bounce. After that you start learning characteristics and learn and learn. The software you are using at the beginning is

not important because the packages have the same basic features.

3D animators must understand how models are rigged, especially character animators. There should not be differences between the real

and 3D creatures. They must also learn the inverse kinematic setups for their character rigs to reduce the amount of time spent key

framing.

The most important is that animators must practice their craft. Animation requires time to learn, and even more time to master. Even

the expert animators may create hundreds of test movies before getting a good final result. A good animator can make an average model

come to life while even the best model can be made to look amateurish by a poor animator. Persistence will pay off, as a skilled

animator can very well be the most important team member of a production.
