Become A Writer - Connect With Your Readers

By:

You have a particular field of specialist knowledge and you wish to share it with others. Writing generally comes much easier when you are knowledgeable, even passionate, about your topic. You've got the info and now you must convey that information to your audience in a way that keeps them engaged and reading. The last thing you wish to do would be to offend or annoy them, yet quite a few writers do that unintentionally.

As an author, words are your tools, your means of expression. A large vocabulary is undoubtedly beneficial if not absolutely required to become an author. The great mistake quite a few would-be writers make is to try and impress their audience with way too many big, impressive words or technical jargon. Your reader doesn't isn't interested in how many large words you know and he'll get lost in jargon he does not understand. Always remember, your goal is to provide information in such a way that helps make sense to the reader and retains his interest.

Think about someone with whom you're acquainted, the person who is totally crazy about, let's say, cinema. You like movies, but when this guy starts speaking it sounds like another language with all of the technical jargon. Or else he sounds like a snob using a bunch of large, fancy three-dollar phrases. Perhaps he's a pretentious name dropper and his entire conversation seems like it's meant only to impress you. Even if he makes a very good point about films, you don't care anymore mainly because he's such a jerk.

Keep in mind, to become a writer, a good author, you have to relate to your reader. Write like you are speaking to your friend. Communicate your thoughts in a way that keeps your reader engaged and wanting far more. Try and inform your audience, don't try to impress them. Here's a little tip to make a point and help you remember, "Eschew Obfuscation."
