Beautiful Stained Glass From Around The World

By:

Traditionally, stained glass refers to the coloured glass windows seen in churches and other grandiose buildings. Typically, small pieces of coloured glass are used to form pictures or patterns, which are held together by frame. In churches these pictures tend to be biblical scenes. Other picture types include historical scenes or natural ones of flora and landscape.

To make stained glass, you need first to have the artistic vision to create something beautiful, and then the engineering skills to put the whole work together. Some things to make sure of, is that your window can support its own weight and is protected from wind and rain.

Some of the world's most famous stained glass windows are:

Notre Dame Cathedral

Our Lady of Paris is a Gothic cathedral in Paris that took nearly one hundred years to build. It is the most popular tourist attraction in all of Paris and welcomes over 13 million visitors every year. A large part of the stained glass windows in Notre Dame date all the way back to the 13th century when the cathedral was first constructed. Like the rest of the cathedral, the stained glass windows are in Gothic style. The most impressive of them all is the set of three Rose windows, which whine like jewels in the light over the west door and on the north and south sides of the church.

Gordon Webster's stained glass:

Alf Webster was a famous stained glass artist who passed on his gift to his son Gordon Webster. Gordon went on to contribute many beautiful stained glass pieces to churches all over Scotland. One of his most famous pieces was that of a red-robbed Christ gloriously pegged to a Celtic Cross with the fires of the Holy Spirit descending upon him.

Marc Chagall's stained glass:

Marc Chagall is one of the most important artists to the Jewish faith. He beautifully painted many stories of Genesis which today can be found in museums and synagogues all over the world. Another one of his major contributions was that of stained glass. The medium allowed him to really explore the fusion of intense colours with the added bonus of natural light. Between 1958 and 1960 he created the windows for the Metz Cathedral- one of his most famous works. He also created beautiful stained glass for a memorial in the UN.

Stained glass might seem like something only suitable for churches or grandiose buildings but some people choose to include it in their homes. Maybe not such large pieces but little touches here and there. It is an incredibly beautiful and special medium after all.
