Beat The Ban In Smoking Shelters

By:

As much as the non smokers among us appreciate being able to breathe clean air in the workplace, bars and indeed any other public domain, the smoking ban has been the cause of great controversy. I, myself am a non smoker and most, if not all, of my friends smoke. This fact leaves me with a dilemma every time we go out, when the inevitable question 'I'm going out for a fag, anyone want to come?' is asked, it's guaranteed that all of the smokers present will go to have one as well. Here's where my dilemma arises, I have a choice of either staying in the pub, on my own, twiddling my thumbs, or go outside and stand with them in the often freezing temperatures. I would gladly appreciate smoking in buildings being allowed again so I wouldn't be uprooted from my comfy place inside to the sub-zero temperatures of the British winter.

It could be argued that people smoke out of choice rather than through force, but we need to bear in mind that it's a habit that is hard to kick, and this difficulty increases if you've been smoking over a long period of time. The health hazards caused by cigarettes have been proven, for instance breathing problems and a tendency to get chest infections, bearing this in mind, it doesn't seem fair that they are being forced to stand in unsheltered areas, especially with the unpredictable British weather which means we have rain 355 days of the year.

All the time more and more pubs and restaurants are opting to invest in smoking shelters in order to cater to the needs of those amongst the customers who smoke. After all, just because a punter smokes does not place their needs below those of others. It has been shown that pubs with smoking shelters in the garden have gained back custom that had been lost since the ban was introduced. This is primarily due to smokers preferring to stay at home rather than go to the pub so they have the luxury of smoking inside should it choose to rain. Since smoking shelters have been introduced to these pub gardens, this custom has returned as they feel that their needs have been acknowledged as well.

It would appear that smoking shelters are a sure fire way to beat the ban and accommodate the needs of both the smoking and the non smoking community.
