Bear Pepper Spray-hikers',campers',hunters', Fisherman's Best Friend

By:

It is that time of year when bears start to emerge from hibernation. And boy oh boy are they hungry. Typically bears can hibernate as long as 7 months, less in warmer climates. Usually October thru the following March is hibernation in the continental U.S. for most species of bears.

Before and after hibernation bears get more aggressive in their search for food. Normally they are relatively peaceful critters until food enters the picture. Bears and other animals like mountain lions and coyotes have very sensitive noses which aids them in their search for food.

The best advice for any hiker, camper, fisherman, hunter or any kind of outdoor enthusiast is to never go into the back country without some bear pepper spray. No less than the Sierra Club agrees.

Avoid bears at all costs. If you see one don't start running away like a lady here in Colorado Springs did last fall. The bear chased her, she ran into an intersection and got hit by a car. Maybe she was lucky the bear didn't get her.

Here are some tips on how to use bear pepper spray:

"Each person should carry a can of bear pepper spray when working or recreating in bear habitat. Spray should be carried in a quick, accessible fashion such as in a hip or chest holster. Spray should be tested once a year. Do not test spray in or near camping area. Be sure to check the expiration date on your can of bear spray.

1.Remove safety clip.

2.Aim slightly down and towards the approaching bear. If necessary, adjust for cross wind.

3.Spray a brief shot when the bear is about 50 feet away.

4.Spray again if the bear continues to approach.

5.Once the animal has retreated or is busy cleaning itself, leave the area as quickly as possible (don't run) or go to an immediate area of safety, such as a car, tree, or building. Do not chase or pursue the animal."

A few other little known tips.

Create a Wall Of Fog-between you and the bear so if he does charge at you he'll run into the spray and retreat.

Discard after use-even if there is some left. There is a reason why the EPA requires 9 oz. If there is any less in the canister it may not be as effective.

If traveling buy on site-airlines will not allow the spray on board or even in checked luggage. TSA guidelines!

When you are in the back countryBear Pepper Spray is your best defense against bears.

Mace Pepper Gel is my personal recommendation because it holds up better in the wind and has a 18 foot range.
