Beach Activities: Collecting Seashells, Find Your Own Treasure

By:

One of the fondest childhood memories most of us have of the beach is collecting seashells. I remember spending hours with my parents and my sand bucket collecting sand dollars and seashells and on occasion a crab or two! It was hours of enjoyment and something that made the beach the beach.

Getting older does not mean that you need to let go of that child within you. Hours on the beach can still be enjoyed collecting seashells! And, if you have little ones with you, you can help them to build a memory that will last a lifetime. So, grab your sand bucket and go hunting for a few simple treasures that can only be found on the beach!

How to Hunt for Seashells:

One of the best times to hunt for seashells is during low tide. Or, after a good storm! When collecting seashells it is important to always check the shell to make sure there isnt a living creature inside of it. If there is, throw it back. Heaven's care for every living thing

Once you have collected your treasures then you will be ready to pack them up and take them home! Once you are home, clean your seashells with a solution of one-half chlorine bleach and one half water. Soak them in the solution. You will notice that they will begin to get brighter in color. Take a toothbrush and gently brush the shells. Once you have cleaned them dry them and put a dab of baby oil on each and gently rub it in!

Find a great place in the house to show off your beautiful treasures. Whether a bedside table, in the bathroom or the living room, find a spot that will compliment the treasures and enjoy them. There are also many crafts that can be made with seashells such as using the sea shells to decorate mirrors or picture frames, candle holders, notebooks, tissue boxes and many other items that they may dress up. A lamp shade made of sea shells can also be a lot of fun and a great conversational piece. Look around your home, and be creative. There is no right or wrong when it comes to creativity! Just simply, a matter of taste! And, you just may find that you have another enjoyable day crafting your sea shells into a beautiful art.
