Pearl Lake gets its name because of the great quantity of oysters found in it, from which pearls can be harvested. However, in recent years the number of mussels has reduced. It is also called Zhenzhu Lake by the locals. This scenic lake is located in Mentougou district which is about 60 kilometres from Beijing. From up above, the lake looks like a string of pearls though, it is actually long and rectangular in shape with a length of about 10 kilometres. It is estimated to hold over 5.3 square kilometres of freshwater and is home to many marine species that thrive in such conditions. The lake in factual terms is a gorge river, being a component of the Yongding River. Hence it is also known by residents by the terms Little Three Gorges and Little Li River in Guilin.
Being surrounded by lush green foliage and the rustic Taihang Mountains, the Pearl Lake is a wondrous sight in itself to behold as the lake magically appears out of the leafy tree clearing transfixing both locals and tourists alike with beautiful blue skies, serene calm water and lush green flora and fauna.
It is said that on a clear day, with no wind blowing, the lake provides a mirror reflection of the surrounding picturesque mountain range. There are many historic monuments along the path of the lake such as a part of the ancient Great Wall, a historic cave temple, a goddess cave and a bridgehead built during the Resistance War with Japan. Towards the north of the lake, lies the quaint little rustic village of Xiangyang which is famous for its apricots, almonds and date trees and provides an especially beautiful sight when the apricot flowers bloom in spring. Travellers can dip into the lake and experience the cool refreshing water during summer or take a boat ride on the lake to explore its many sights and sounds.
