Be Happy With Your Kitchen Lighting

By:

Most people spend a large amount of time in their kitchens therefore it is really important to get your lighting right and with the right advise you can achieve this.

It is a mistake to not adequately illuminate your kitchen. This makes for a depressing dull environment making cooking, cleaning and often dining a negative experience. Lets face it cleaning can be enough of a chore as it is without having to struggle to see properly. For hygiene purposes it is also important to have good light in kitchen areas whether they are residential or commercial kitchens. The dining table is often used for more functions than just dining for example school homework or art projects are often carried out there. So neglect this area at your peril, lack of planning can lead to costly retrofits at a later stage and those jobs can be very messy. A few simple pointers can make all the difference to your lighting plan and make your valuable time spent in the kitchen a more positive enlightened experience. The following are just a few things you can consider when tackling your kitchen lighting.

Low voltage energy saver recessed lights, will give your kitchen a clean sharp look. (they have the added bonus of not collecting grease in cooking areas)

Consider under counter lights to light up work surfaces so you are not standing in your shadow.

Where there are high ceilings uplights can be used on top of units to reflect light and reduce the number of downlights needed.

Alternatively consider using high powered spot lights strategically placed so they are invisible and all you see is the light that they give.

You can afford to use lower hanging lights over an island for dramatic effect. The choice available is endless and the size of the island will dictate how many pendants are needed and their size. This is also an opportunity to really add your own stamp on your kitchen design and even add some colour if you wish.

Leds set into kitchen unit plinths are great for effect and to highlight flooring.

Using colour changing lights behind a glass splash back is a really fun and effective addition in modern kitchens.

Have your light sources operating separately so that you can use different levels of your lighting to cater for functionality and ambience.
