Bathroom Tile Ideas For The Budget Conscious

By:

The continuing downturn in the economy means that more people than ever are concentrating on improving their existing homes instead of buying new ones. If you are among that number, you are probably trying to figure out ways to fix up that dated-looking bathroom without killing your budget. Porcelain tile is a great way to go: here are some bathroom tile ideas for budget conscious home owners.

-- Do it yourself: Yes, you can! Take a few classes at your local home improvement store and you'll have all the knowledge you need to know to do tile work in your bathroom and have it turn out looking fantastic. Tiling is one of the easiest flooring installations for do-it-yourselfers, and if you are going to use tiles as accent pieces on walls, it's even easier.

-- Get the right tools: Of course, you'll need all the stuff for tiling. You can either get what you need from your home improvement store, or better yet: shop for discount porcelain tile online (it's much, much more reasonably priced) and get your tools at the same time.

-- Think adult: You don't want to have to redo your bathroom over and over as the kids are growing up. Stay away from kiddie-themed bathrooms, and keep the teddy bear and balloon decorating schemes in their bedrooms where they belong.

-- Choose your colors and styles carefully: The overall decorating style of your house should transition easily into the bathroom. In other words, garish and shocking is seldom a good idea. Bright colors as accents work if they're used sparingly: for the most part you want the color scheme of a bathroom to be restful and inviting.

-- Consider the size of your bathroom: If it is small, it will be overwhelmed by dark colors. If it is big, do not layer different colors of tile on the walls since it will make the room seem smaller. Prints and designs on tiles are tricky: using them too much can look tacky. It's best to use a design tile every 5 tiles or so as an accent. The exceptions to this are mosaic tiles. Mosaic laid in a row as a backsplash is a very attractive look: just be careful not to overuse it. Mosaic tiles also make great floor coverings, but do not use them as the overall material for a shower wall or stall: you just might get dizzy!

-- You will save money if you repaint your bathroom and then use tile as a backsplash. One nice option is to retile the floor and then any leftover tiles over the vanity for added color and interest.

As mentioned earlier, be wary of where you purchase your tiles from, especially if you are on a tight budget. You can get lots of great discount porcelain tile from online retailers that will save you a lot of money over buying from specialty places.
