Bathroom Renovation - Doing It Yourself

Bathroom Renovation - Doing It Yourself

By:

While the bathroom in the home never used to be a focal point, recently more and more people have been turning their bathroom into dream bathrooms. The cost of bathroom renovation can really be expensive; however, you can save a whole lot of money if you do some of the bathroom renovation yourself. Of course you may need a bit of help along the way.

Unfortunately a lot of people who do the work themselves end up going way over the budget they had planned to spend on their bathroom renovation. One of the biggest mistakes they made was by not planning appropriately for their project. A well thought out plan is the key to staying within your budget when fixing up your bathroom.

Check out your finances to see how much money you can spend on your bathroom renovation. You'll need to budget as much as you possibly can without going broke. It's better to budget too high and end up with money left over than to plan a budget too low and end up spending more money than you could afford.

Take careful measurements in your bathroom so you can accurately assess which of your dream fixtures will fit. Then you can confidently purchase your bathtub or shower unit, sink, toilet and cabinets, knowing they will fit perfectly. Digital measuring tools are your best bet for a truly accurate measurement.

Next you need to make a list or a rough sketch of your bathroom renovation plans. Are you thinking of a new style of tub, shower, or sink? Are you planning on relocating the new fixtures from where your current ones sit?

Decide on whether you'll paint, wallpaper or tile. Get an overall idea first of what you want and draw it on paper or use the computer to see if it will work. It always helps to have a backup plan on other ways you would renovate your bathroom in case something doesn't work in your original plan.

When you go the home improvement store for supplies, make sure that you have your drawing or list with you. Be sure to compare prices of the items you want before purchasing them as well. This will help you make sure you get what you want for the best possible price.

Be flexible. You may have an original plan and then spot something else you like better - like a pedestal sink that's cheaper than the one you originally were thinking of getting. Jot down all of the prices of the items you need, but don't buy just yet!

Collect some paint or wallpaper color samples to take home. Test them out to see how they will look in your bathroom. Colors in the store often look quite different at home because of dissimilar lighting conditions.

Take a look at your figures and see how they fit into your budget. Did the figures go over budget or did they stay within the limits you set? You'll need some breathing room within your budget to account for any unexpected items you end up needing, and of course, figure in the taxes of the items you plan to buy.

At this point, you can decide if your bathroom renovation ideas are practical and affordable. If they are, go ahead and purchase your selected items. It's best to buy everything that you'll need before you start work, that way you won't have to constantly run out to the store to buy miscellaneous items.

If you budget and plan well before the renovation starts, you can enjoy your dream bathroom while basking in the fact that you were able to achieve it within your set budget.
