Bath Lifts: Keeping Safe While Taking A Bath

By:

The bathtub can be one of the best places to relax. A warm bath can help sooth the muscles and help with bone aches. Many people who are older or suffer from arthritis also find it impossible to stand safely for the time it takes to take a shower.

Even with a nonskid bathtub liner, it can still be very dangerous for people who are mobility challenged to stand up in the bathtub. There are many sharp edges and unforgiving surfaces in a bathroom. A fall in the bathtub can easily cause serious injuries. This is the reason that most people who are mobility challenged do not take standing showers.

While you can greatly improve your safety by taking a bath instead of a shower, it is also often difficult for mobility challenged people to get into and out of the bathtub. It can be hard to lower into the tub and once in, getting out can be very difficult. Rather than hire a personal assistant, many people use a bath lift.

A bath lift is a great way to keep your bath time private and make sure that you do not run the risk of serious injury. A bath lift is a mobility aid that is placed in the bathtub and rises and lowers to make it easy to get into and out of the tub.

Most utilize a plastic seat and are battery powered. Several powerful suction cups are used to keep the bath lift in place. These are very heavy duty suction cups though, and require a special tool to remove. Since they use suction cups, no bathtub modification is needed. This makes them perfect for traveling and can be installed in only a few moments.

There are a few different styles of lift available. Many feature reclining seats so that it is possible to lay back and relax in the bathtub. Both lap and chest harnesses are available for most lifts. As an added safety feature most battery powered bath lifts will only lower into the bathtub if they have enough power to rise up again.

Almost all bath lifts use a battery to raise and lower the lift. They are controlled by an attached floating remote. One model is available however, that uses water power. It can not support as much weight as a battery powered lift, but it does not use any electrical components. Most people choose to use the battery powered bath lifts though, because they operate much faster and more efficiently.

A bath lift is a very good way to keep you or perhaps a loved one safe. They can easily be installed in a few moments and do not require the user to modify the bathtub in anyway. They are lightweight, but still able to do some heavy duty lifting.
