Bateria In Shower Nozzle

Bateria In Shower Nozzle

By:

US scientists have found that shower heads can conceal the harmful germs such as mycobacterium avium. Another well known bacteria found in water and known to be lurking in showers is legionellae. Legionnaires' disease is normally acquired by inhalation or aspiration of legionellae from a contaminated environmental source. Similarly if the mycobacterium avium bacteria is inhalled it can cause a mycobacterium avium complex which is also similar to pneumonia. Legionnaires' disease is caused by the legionella pneumophila bacterium and is a type of pneumonia. The bacteria is found in fresh water, warm water environments, cooling towers, hot water systems, whirlpool spa baths, clinical humidifiers in respiratory equipment, supermarket vegetable sprays, natural spa baths, fountains, soil and potting compost. Though healthy people need not fear, people with weakened immune systems should take caution to prevent infection.

If a shower is used in your family you can avoid bacteria build up in your shower head by taking these steps.

1. Flush the head of your shower with only hot water - Run only hot water, approximately once a month ( you can do this more regularly) through the shower head to get rid of the gathering germs and micro organisms.

2. Clean Shower Head - Rotate your shower head to remove it in an anti clockwise direction where it is attached to the shower pipe. Place the shower nozzle in a bowl of white vinegar. The holes of your shower head should be totally immersed. For about 15-25 minutes soak in vinegar. Stubborn deposits may take a little longer, but do not soak for more than 30 minutes at a time. After soaking, use an old toothbrush or other stiff brush to scrub the holes clean. Reattach shower head. Get rid of the remaining vinegar by running some hot water through the head of the shower. Note: If you can't remove the head of the shower for cleaning, fill a small plastic bag like a sandwich bag with white vinegar and secure tightly around the shower head. As mentioned above, soak for 15-20 minutes but no longer than 30 minutes at a time. A hard brush should be used to clean holes, and then run only hot water through the shower head to wash it out.

3. Your shower head should be replaced every few years. - Simply buy a new one as shower heads are not very expensive. It is preferable to have a metal shower head with a filter. Get rid of the old one that has accumulated microbes. Cleansing with chlorine or vinegar prevents massive build up, but eventually an old shower head will simply grow the bacteria back.
