Teaching Youth Basketball

Have you been drafted to teaching youth basketball? Maybe even your own kids team needs a coach and they want you. What do you do if you have no idea what to do and are totally unfamiliar with basketball?

Getting volunteers for youth basketball teams can be difficult. But do not let the fact that you are a novice prevent you from helping out. There are plenty of ways that you can learn about how you can teach youth group basketball without having to be an expert coach. You do not have to be perfect, you just have to be there.

Learn the rules

The first thing that you need to do if you are planning on coaching a youth basketball team on your own is to learn the rules. The rules will keep you abreast of what is going on. Fortunately, the rules for basketball are among the easiest to learn. You can learn the rules and then teach them to your kids that you are coaching

Get to know the kids

Be a coach and a friend. Not all of the kids will have a parent figure that they can turn to when they are in trouble. You want to be more than a coach, you want to be a mentor. Again, you do not have to be perfect. You just have to be willing to try your best. Your best is better than a half hearted attempt by a professional. More than anything, kids want someone who cares about them. Get to know the kids, their strengths and weaknesses and exploit the strengths. Everyone is good at something - find out what your kids excel at and make them shining stars.

Build them with praise

Screaming and yelling at anyone is ineffective. It shows poor management skills and the fact that you feel as though you are out of control. Use praise instead. If you have to use criticism, make it constructive criticism. Build your kids with praise and keep the critical comments to a minimum. Watch the difference in how they behave,

Teach sportsmanship and practice

Build up their confidence and skills with practice sessions and drills. The, when you are done with that, you should spend some time talking to them about sportsmanlike conduct. This is very important if they are to go far in the game. Unsportsmanlike conduct is not tolerated in professional sports or even at the high school and college level. Do your children a favor and prepare them for the future as both basketball players and adults.
