The birth of the basketball sport is very interesting. The first idea was of Dr. James Naismith. Dr. James Naismith was a Canadian born physical instruction professor and instructor at the international young mens Christian Association.
On a rainy day, in early December 1891, Dr. Naismith was trying to keep his pupils occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the winter period.
Dr. Naismith rejected various ideas as he considered them as too rough or unbecoming to walled-in gymnasiums.
Dr. Naismith wrote the basic rules of the game. A peach basket was nailed on to a 10 foot preeminent track. The peach basket retained its bottom and therefore the ball had to be repossessed manually after each basket, or point scored. Since this way was not feasible the bottom of the basket was removed, and the ball was poked out with a long rod.
Peach baskets were used for many years and finally in 1906 they were replaced by metal hoops with back boards. Read more

Womens basketball began in 1892. A physical education teacher Senda Berenson modified Dr. Naismiths directions for women.
Basketball was initially played with an association football.
The first balls which were exactly made for basketball were brown. In the late 1950s Tony Hinkle, introduced the orange ball that is now in use. His idea was that the orange ball would be more evident to players and spectators.
Dribbling was not share of the original game, but became a major part of the game around the 1950s.
The Basketball Association of America was shaped in 1946.
The first game was played among the Toronto Huskies and New York Knickerbockers in Ontario, Canada.
The womens National Basketball Association activated in 1997.
