Basics About Black Tie Dress Code For Men

By:

When it comes to the dress code for a black tie event it is very important that the men pay attention to their entire clothing that they are going to wear to the occasion. This is a formal event and has a dress code that must be adhered to. Most often men that are new to these types of events are not quite sure of what the format is when it comes to knowing exactly how to dress.

Most often a black-tie event is by invitation only and if one is in doubt than usually located on the invitation in the lower corner it will clarify as to the type of dress code that is expected, and how formal it is. One thing for sure is that when it comes to a black-tie event one wants to arrive perhaps a little over dress rather than underdressed. Being overdressed will create a favorable response whereas being under dressed will not be looked upon favorably by the host or hostess.

Sometimes individuals get confused thinking that the black-tie event is the most prestigious event although in reality it is the white tie event that is the most formal. This is followed by the black tie event, and in this case it usually demands a black tuxedo although the formal wearing of the hat can be eliminated. Also in most cases it doesn't require the full dress tuxedo which includes the tailcoat.

It is not uncommon for men that are new to the social scene to misunderstand some of the dress codes that are applicable to these types of venues. Sometimes a young man that receives an invitation that quotes black tie is required often assume that this is the only part of the dress code that they must endure, meaning wearing a black tie.

Most often this type of request is indicating that a dinner jacket is expected at least to be worn. How strict the dress code will be will depend on the host themselves. Many hosts have different interpretations of what a dress code represents, and although an invitation may suggest a black tie it could simply mean that some type of suit is required to be worn. With other hosts this may mean the actual formal dress code for black-tie event that has been around for many years.

In order for one to be sure it would be well worth a little bit of research into simply finding out just exactly what it is the host is expecting. If this is the first time a man is attending an event by this host, perhaps speaking to guests that have been to previous events hosted by this particular host, will help to give some insight as to what should be worn.

In most cases though when it is indicated that it is a black-tie sometimes the host will put on whether it is preferred or optional. More modern day hosts will often go with the optional as it has become commonly known that many individuals don't keep tuxedos amongst their regular attire. However, if the host is insistent that it is going to be a full formal black-tie affair than renting a tuxedo to fit the occasion is always an option.
