If you are having spontaneous, abnormal, sudden contractions of the muscle on your back part, you are experiencing what is called back spasm. It is a condition that is fleeting, but can be very painful. When it occurs on the area near the spinal cord or it affects the nerve endings, it can cause pain that an average person would have a hard time dealing with. This kind of spasm can be identified as a sudden twitching, which can happen while you are twisting, pushing, pulling, or exerting effort on your back. If the spasm does not persist, you can continue with what you were doing, but if it gets worse when you continue, you have to stop what you are doing as a precaution.
When you tell the doctor about your problem with spasms, your medical history along with physical examination is needed to pinpoint the cause of the problem. If there are tenderness and general spasms when you bend forward, a serious condition may already be developing.
When back spasm attacks, it can cause severe pain that may worsen with movement, so it is best for you to lie still and avoid exerting the area. You can sit or lie curled up, arching the spine forward. When you feel a swollen or inflamed muscle in the back area, that may be the cause of the spasm. Sports that strain the muscles often cause these involuntary movements. Playing football, baseball, basketball, weightlifting, and even golf, can lead to sudden pain on your back.
Some cases can be cured with rest and compression, while others require medical attention immediately. Your doctor may also recommend muscle relaxants to prevent the tightening of the muscles; anti-inflammatory medication can also be given to those who have a high risk of severe spasms, while injections can also be recommended upon further study of the problem.
While some back spasm may go away if you stop what you were doing, others do not. The case can even get worse if you have forward pelvis, back weakness, lordosis, tight hamstrings, and weak muscles on the area of the spine. Problems like arthritis and tumor can also increase the risk of painful and worrisome spasms. Weak muscles on the stomach region can amplify the problem.
To prevent spasms from happening often, you should strengthen your abdominal muscles and back muscles before starting any strenuous activity like weightlifting and any activity that requires sudden movement of the back. Exercises that target the muscles on the lower back can also be done to improve your flexibility and enable you to go back to your normal routine in no time. Other forms of conservative treatment may also be tried in certain cases.
