Basic Facts About Bath Salts

By:

Bath salts are water soluble, inorganic products, which are added to the bathing water. Bath salts are intended to reciprocate the properties of hot springs and natural mineral baths. They improve the cleaning ability of the water, create a medical improvement and enhance our day-to-day bathing experience.

The following inorganic products are usually referred to as bath salts.

-Sodium chloride or table salt
-Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda
-Magnesium sulphate or Epsom salt
-Borax
-Sodium sesquicarbonate
-Sodium hexamataphosphate or Calgon

Even though soaps and other surfactants used along with bath water are also salts in chemical parlance, they are not specifically referred to as bath salts, since they do not have the crystalline, hard granule shape. Since we use the bath salts to improve the bathing experience, normally colours and fragrances are added to them. Invariably, oils are also added to them to make the granules amorphous. Sometimes, effervescent and foaming agents are added to them.

It is believed that the earliest information about these salts is found in China when the various types of salts, their uses and methods of their extraction was published around 2700 B.C. It is said that Hippocrates recommended the use of salt water for healing several ailments and asked the patients to take a sea bath. This practice was continued by the Greeks for several centuries. In 1753, Dr. Charles Russel, an English physician, published a book titled, The Uses of Sea Water.

Bath salts should be able to act on all types of skins including dry skins. They should relieve the stiff muscles and at the same time be harmless and without any unwanted side effects. The bathing experience should be a relaxing and comfortable one when these salts are used. They should be bubbly and soothing. The colour is another important factor. You can use any colour that pleases you but there should not be any harmful chemicals in the colouring agent. The oil mixed with the salt can be a fragrance agent like lavender oil, peppermint or ylang ylang.

The bath salts can be mixed with herbs to obtain natural salts. These salts can be used as aromatherapy for relaxing, soothing and invigorating our senses. It is quite easy to make the salt mixtures at our home. They can be stored in jars or containers with tight lids to retain their naturalness and effectiveness. Your own recipe of these salts can be an ideal gift on family occasions to relatives and friends. The persons receiving your special receipt of these salts will not only appreciate your gift but also remember you for long. You can also buy them online nowadays, however, you should not be carried away by fancy sales propaganda. Ordering bath salts from reputed and established companies is ideal to improve your health in a natural way.
