Basements Waterproofing From The Negative Side :the Details(2nd Part)

Pre-waterproofing: Steps and actions

1. First of all you have to locate all active leaks either linear (cracks, joints) or localized (holes).

2. Enlarge the cracks to a minimum section of 2x2cm and the holes to a parallelepiped of 3x3x2cm.

The walls of the cuts should be sound and vertical. Even better if the width of the groove increases to the sense of depth (undercutting).

It is very important for the mortar to expand and anchor well in the groove.

3. Surfaces should ideally be vacuum cleaned and saturated to the point of refusal.

4. Mix only small quantities of the rapid setting mortar: one or two hanfuls of powder. Don't forget that the mortar should be mixed and applied at a "lightning" speed.

5. Mix in a rubber bowl until the paste is thick. Don't overmix because the setting procedure will be adversely influenced.

Mixing proportion: usually water/powder: 1/3,5 by volume.

Mixing should be effected in not more than 30"-40". Be very concentrated and work briskly.

6. Prepare a pear-shaped stiff mass. Keep it in your hands until it gets slightly warm. Press it firmly into the void and keep the pressure for 30"-60". This is not the time to be hasty!

Avoid any movement of your hand while pressing and especially any twisting movement. It will adversely influence the setting of the mortar.

7. For long cracks and joints start from the lowest pressure, gradually and patiently moving towards the highest.

8. Big holes will need more than one interventions. Sealing is effected gradually and patiently starting from the periphery and moving towards the center.

9. Never sprinkle these powdery mortars directly on the leaks (without first mixing them with water). They cannot function like this. Not only your problem will remain unsolved, but - what's more - any future intervention will be more difficult.

10. These rigid, rapid setting mortars are not suitable for moving cracks or expansion joints.

11. Many times, auxiliary, temporary drainage measures are needed during pre-waterproofing. These are indispensable in the case of pressures higher than 0,5 bars.
