The basement is usually the place where technical and mechanical tools are placed, which makes it more likely to be ignored and unnoticed by people- especially when it comes to the maintenance of its cleanliness.
The basement is usually located below the ground floor. It is a floor used for technical and mechanical functions. It is the place where fuse boxes, air-conditioning systems, furnaces, water heaters and the like are stored away.
With these important equipments that are usually located in the basement, basement water should not be ignored. This should be acted upon to save the floor from possible damages. But pondering upon the location of the basement, where does this water come from in the first place?
There are many ways by which water can crawl into the basement of your house or your building. The first assumption would be that it came from the roof. This would necessarily mean any of these three things: first is that there is no gutter for roof water in the house/building; second, the water leaked or overflowed from the gutter of the roof; and third, the water from the roof was caused by clogged leaders.
The wall of the building or the house should also be checked. This can as well be the source of the water in your basement. How?
Foundation walls are typically reached by water when rain comes. The water seeps into the cracks of the walls. In time, the water will eventually flow from the wall to the empty spaces and run off to your basement, which is usually lower than your ground floor. Excessive water would mean having a puddle in your basement. And since rainwater usually drains towards the house and is heading for your foundation wall, do not be surprise to find excessive water in your basement if youre not going to act upon it.
Flooding is the leading causes for the insurance claims, and it causes lots of stress with property loss and cleanup. Few of the common areas of the problem are:
1. Walls, which are saturated by the ground water.
2. The appliance, generally washer, which has the leak
3. Sewer water backing-up in a basement.
When you have the water in the basement it is important to decide where it has come from & if it can happen again. Also, there are many ways to go with this & ensure that you will not have the basement water damage once again.
1. Check out your gutters. Ensure that they are not any leaves by checking and cleaning them once in a year. Check and see they are attached properly and draining away from the foundation. Even though it does not necessarily look very good, they must drain 4-feet away from the foundation.
2. If theyre any settling over your foundation? Then, fill it with dirt in case required.
3. Are all your sprinklers working in a right way? If not, then they might let off a lot of water. Check it monthly to ensure they are not leaking.
