By:

Bark mulch is plant mulch made from tree bark. This type of mulch can be found most anywhere, including garden stores, home-improvement stores, or even at local sawmills. This mulch is inexpensive because this type of mulch is considered a waste material. Sometimes, this type of mulch can be free depending on where you go to get the mulch. Sawmills dispose of this material we can use as mulch because they only use the wood from a tree. Bark mulch tends to be very popular with gardeners because of the way the mulch looks once laid, the fact that it is inexpensive, and there are many different types of bark mulch available.

In addition to mulch serving many purposes in a garden or landscaping purpose, mulch gives any a bed a more finished appearance. Mulch is applied to beds for a number of reasons. Some benefits of laying mulch include the suppression of weeds, retaining water beneath the mulch in the soil, and enriching the soil. Bark mulch is chosen for the above listed reasons and in addition bark mulch breaks down fairly easily into the soil. When bark mulch breaks down it provides the soil with nutrients, which is great for gardening purposes.

There are many types of bark mulch. Some of the types of this mulch include cedar bark mulch and pine bark mulch. The bark mulch can be broken down into wood chip mulch, ground into a finer mulch, or even ground further down into a fiber material. Some companies manufacturing and selling this mulch choose to leave the mulch the color it is or they choose to dye the mulch. Depending on the purpose for which the mulch is laid, gardeners tend to leave the mulch color as is while people laying mulch for landscaping and aesthetic reason tend to purchase and lay colored mulch to better suit their needs. The different sizes bark mulch comes in suite different plants for different reasons.

Smaller ground bark mulch is used around smaller plants as to not smother plants under which the mulch is placed. Bark mulch that is left too big will not prevent weed growth as effectively as other mulch because of the large gaps, which occur between the pieces of the bark mulch. Large pieces of bark mulch do not break down as easily, either. This causes a few problems with the mulch. The mulch tends to look ratty after a growing season, which sways a gardener to lay more mulch over top of it, which then causes the mulch to compact over time preventing water flow to the plants.

There a few things to consider when lying bark mulch. Bark mulch should be laid down to a depth of one to two inches. Bark mulch should be raked to ensure even distribution. Before mulch is laid, make sure the plants it is being laid between are not too close to one another. This allows for breathing room between the plants and mulch. Bark mulch should not be mounded up and around plants. This prevents water from getting to the roots below the mounds of mulch. Bark mulch should break down completely before laying new layers of mulch over top of the old bark mulch.

If bark mulch has only partially broken down or is starting to look unpleasant, the old mulch should be removed before adding a new layer. Before laying a new layer of mulch, gardeners choose to spread fertilizer on top of the soil to give the plants and soil more nutrients. If there are too many layers of mulch, water and nutrients are often trapped in the layers of mulch instead of absorbed into the soil. Another consideration to be taken when choosing bark mulch for your garden is whether or not the mulch is too acidic for your plants. Gardeners wherever you choose to purchase the mulch from can help you with this.
