Image based utilizes the ability to capture the image of the barcode, then decodes the information through a process, and finally stores the information or processes it. Laser based scanner use a light to read the barcode label. Laser based scanners are quicker than image based. Image based barcode scanner are a bit more durable however, they do not have a large scanning field only up to around 10 inches. The laser based barcode scanner has a range of around 2 feet, but has moveable parts, which can easily break if the scanner is dropped or bumped around quite a bit.
