History of the Barcelona Chair

Mies van der Rohe was an architect and designer at the Bauhaus school in Germany when he designed the Barcelona chair for the International Exposition of 1929. The chair took its name from the location where the exhibition was hosted that year, and was the centrepiece of the German Pavillion, which van der Rohe also designed.
Van Der Rohes Pavillion was a huge success at the exhibition, putting Germany back on the map for design and architecture after the devastation of World War I. Very few changes have been made to the original design, except for when Van Der Rohe re-designed the chair in the 1950s with a seamless metal frame to take advantage of the invention of stainless steel. Leather also replaced the ivory coloured pigskin which was used for the original chair. The Barcelona Chair was honoured by the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the original can be found in the museum.
Although Mies Van Der Rohe is solely accredited for the design of the Barcelona Chair, it is rumoured that his personal and professional partner Lilly Reich co-designed the piece.
